About Alcohol-free Stouts and Ales
Alcohol-free stouts and ales have been considered the holy grail of the sector.
The variety now spans craft styles such as alcohol-free IPA, non-alcoholic American Pale Ale, Amber and Golden ales with all the heart and soul of a full-bodied craft brew.
There are now more choices of non-alcoholic stout, alcohol-free porter and brown ale without alcohol.
One of the few long-standing brands of stout without alcohol include the Portuguese Super Bock Stout and Cheers Preta that have been around long before the current rise in black beers that offer an alternative to alcohol .
A particularly good example of a non-alcoholic porter is Big drop Off Piste Hazelnut Porter. This is a hearty brew without alcohol that’s hard to equal.
There are also well-known names such as Sam Smith’s Brown Ale that’s now available under 0.5% ABV.
St Peter’s in Suffolk produce an excellent zero percent stout and offer a refreshing Golden Ale that’s also available as a non-alcoholic organic beer.
Golden Ale is also known as Blonde Ale which is a mild-tasting without strong hop or malt flavours.
Big Drop Field Hopper Golden Ale is an easy drinking ale with hints of honey but with a balanced bitterness and subtle aromas of grapefruit and orange blossom.
Another favourite among people who prefer their ale with a softer flavour is Pale Ale that’s sometimes called American Pale Ale or APA. It’s usually an amber colour made with mainly pale malt but it can have varying taste depending on the brewing method and the quantity of hops.
The popular Ghostship Pale Ale is now available with less than 0.5% alcohol and comes very close to Adnams’ alcoholic Ghostship.
Those who like a more bitter ale with punchy flavours will enjoy Big Drop Double Strike Sour. Sour beers have a higher acidity than most other ales and, as the name suggests, have a sour taste – if you liked sour jellies as a kid, you’ll probably love this!
