Welcome to The Alcohol-Free Shop

Welcome to The Alcohol-Free Shop John Risby

People from all walks of life who give up using alcohol for a variety of reasons quickly notice how hard it is to find alternative products that are alcohol-free.

From drinks to chocolates, health and beauty products to gifts, it seems that, just as the devil has all the best tunes, all the best products have alcohol in them.

There have been web sites trying to provide some of the alcohol-free products on the market, but I found none that had them all in one place and certainly none provided the level of service and quality that I, as a customer, expected.

So, after almost two years of research, investigation, and hard-work to find some of the best products available, I'm delighted to finally open our electronic doors and welcome you to The Alcohol-Free Shop.

The shop is organised in four main sections - eat, drink, live and give. Let's take you briefly through each in turn.

Not long after I gave up alcohol, a company I do business with sent me a bottle of champagne and a box of chocolates as a 'thank you'. I passed the champagne on to friends, but I was looking forward to eating the chocolates. You can imagine my disappointment when I opened the chocolates to find they were also full of alcohol. No doubt they were lovely chocolates (and my wife confirmed that as she scoffed them down) but I couldn't enjoy them.

Looking around it seemed most of the best chocolate selections did contain at least some alcohol. I found some of the luxury market leaders offered alcohol-free varieties on the web but these tended to be unexciting. There wasn' t really a good alternative to those lovely alcohol-packed truffles.

So we decided the solution to this was to offer our own range of alcohol-free luxury chocolates. We've sourced some truly fantastic alcohol-free truffles which are hand-made for us by Browne's Chocolates of Devon. These truffles are absolutely delicious. Everyone who tastes them loves them. Our chocolates are available both in gift presentation boxes or in standard ballotins.

We also sell a range of other alcohol-free chocolates and snacks and plan to expand our 'Eat' section with further alcohol-free food items over time.

Giving up drink, whether temporarily due to pregnancy or medication, or as a permanent lifestyle change, means, for many people, missing out on drinks they have previously enjoyed.

Whether it's a nice glass of red wine with stilton and crackers, a white-wine and soda on a hot summer day, or a refreshing bottle of beer after a hard-day's work, everyone has their favourite and there's only so many glasses of orange juice or cola a person can drink.

De-alcoholised wines are wines which have had the alcohol removed using a variety of techniques. All the wines we sell have less than 0.5% alcohol remaining (most are around 0.3%). In most of Europe these wines would be called alcohol-free but, due to a quirk of British law, we have to call them "de-alcoholised".

We also sell a range of other drinks including soft-drinks, non-alcoholic alternatives to spirits and liqueurs, drinking chocolates and relaxing teas. We will be expanding our range of alcohol-free drinks in the coming months.

It can come as a surprise to find that alcohol is present in many health and beauty products. Mouthwash, for instance, often contains up to around 30% alcohol! You'd have less alcohol if you rinsed your mouth in a glass of white wine (although it probably wouldn't leave your mouth smelling as clean). Perfume contains large amounts of alcohol. Deodorants can contain alcohol. In fact, it can be hard to find health and beauty products that don't!

It's important to point out that not all alcohols are the same, and that when we talk about alcohol we are refering to the type of alcohol that intoxicates you if you drink too much of it (ethanol). There are other forms of alcohol that are completely different. For instance Cetyl Alcohol is a fatty alcohol often made from vegetable oils such as palm oil or coconut oil and has none of the harmful side effects of alcohol. But generally when you see a product contains Alcohol, Alcohol Denat., Denatured Alcohol, Alcohol (SD) etc, it is ethanol.

If you want to know more about the different types of alcohol and what we allow in our products, our article section will tell you all you need to know.

We have a wide range of alcohol-free health and beauty products available including alcohol-free mouthwashes, deodorants, hair and body products and supplements. We will be expanding this range as we develop The Alcohol Free Shop.

The Give section contains a range of specially selected products that are safe to give to somebody who, for whatever reason, is not currently drinking alcohol. It's important to remember that every product we sell is of superior-quality and suitable for most tastes and lifestyles.

One of the groups of people that our gifts are especially suited to are pregnant women and new-mums. What could be more traditional than celebrating the good news of a pregnancy or birth than by cracking open a bottle of bubbly? We offer three fantastic sparkling white wine alternatives to the usual alcoholic tipple. We have the Pol Vignan Mousseux, our own-brand Brighton Bubbly, and even an organic sparkling white wine called Mona Claudia.

A combination of sparkling wine with a selection of health and beauty products, such as our wonderful hand-made natural soaps, or our range of own-brand luxury hand-made chocolates, specially prepared in our classic wicker basket hampers create a stylish, value-for-money gift.
